The year 2020 was a memorable year not only because of COVID-19 but also of the other graces received.
In this series, I would recall the gifts I received last year.
I would like to invite you to join me in this reflection by listing your blessings from 2020.
I would be posting one reflection every day for the next seven days starting today, the Feast of the Epiphany or the “Three Kings” culminating with the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism, which marks the end of the Christmas Season.
Gift # 1. The Gift of Family
Looking back on March, April, and May, it was difficult when we were confined to our homes. For some, it was a marathon of Netflix binge-watching, became overnight chefs posting whatever food they cooked for that day and endless Zoom meetings.
For some, it was an uncertain time, wondering where to get the next meal, fearful whenever news of new infections are announced, spending sleepless nights thinking about when this lockdown will end.
Whatever it was for each of us, the lockdown gave me something to be grateful for.
Those were the months that I spend time with my sisters since they lived with me during the lockdown.
I am nostalgic about the lockdown because life was simple.
While I worried about our health, we also found peace and contentment since we were together.
I am especially fond of recalling that we would go to the Garden of Filipino Saints every afternoon.
They would trim the grasses and water the plants.
There was a vegetable garden at the back that yielded our daily harvest of okra and kamoteng-dahon.
I know that for some, this gift of family is something that they no longer have. I empathize and respect their loss and brokenness.
It is precisely for this reason that I come to appreciate what I have.
I hope that families will appreciate each other for what they have because once you lost it, you might never gain it back.
