Why is it that Filipinos are addicted to Facebook? Some called the country the “Social Media Capital of the World” because we spent so much time up to four hours every day on social media. I have not read any research on the reasons why we spend a lot of our time on social media, but I would like to speculate here.
Filipinos want to connect since we are naturally amiable and friendly as people. We have a ready smile even for strangers and can even spare some time to talk with our friends and acquaintances. I think Facebook becomes our digital venue for expressing this sociable nature.
Nowadays, I have noticed that Facebook has become the venue where people expressed their sentiments and opinions. Just read the comments on some issues, and you will have a strong feel of the public pulse.
I think this is another Filipino trait. Usually, when we cannot speak straight to authorities, we make tsismis (gossips) or libak (backbiting) to vent out our anger or frustrations. Facebook offers us a platform where we can make tsismis or libak!
Looking at the current situation, particularly about COVID-19 pandemic, there are so many comments of frustration and even despair from the people.
Unfortunately, leaders of all stripes and colors have their various agenda and perspectives. Not necessarily aligned with the “masa” (the marginalized majority). However, they would believe that they are doing what they are supposed to do.
Well, who can question that? After all, they can always say that as leaders, this is what their conscience tells them to do, and they have done their best. Who can question that?
All we can do is revise the lyrics that say, “you did your best, but we guess, your best wasn’t good enough.”
But, they are the leaders, so I think they are right, hopefully.
