Listening to the Holy Spirit

The First Reading tells us about a modus vivendi ( a way of life) in resolving conflicts among the early Christians especially on matters of the faith.

"Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question" (Acts 15: 1 -2).

The problem on how to deal with the uncircumcised is causing division in the mission areas particularly outside of the Holy Land.

Here we can see about the unity of the Church with the leaders in Jerusalem. They do not decide on their own. Instead, they refer their problems with the apostles in Jerusalem.

It is not that every minute conflict is presented to the Apostles but in cases that affect the teachings of the Lord, there has to be no delay.

"It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us..."

On the other hand, the Apostles do not decide whimsically on matters of faith. Their decision is considered as the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

At the same time, they do not claim that their rulings are merely that of the Holy Spirit but it is also their own. This acknowledges that there is freedom in reaching this decision.

The Apostles are not automatons but are conscious and active participants in the process of the discernment God's will.

"The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you" (John 14: 26).

The Johannine Gospel suggests that this magisterial role of the Holy Spirit continues even up to the present time.

As the Church faces new challenges, it listens to the Holy Spirit and to one another.

Authentic listening starts with the right intention of saving the souls of the faithful. It is not political or for personal gains but for helping the people find assurance for their faith and salvation.

Lastly, there is respect or at least deference to the leaders of the Catholic faith. They do not decide on their own but listens what the elders and the Apostles decide.
