When the Enhanced Community Quarantine started, I realized that the people in my chaplaincy needed a visible reminder of God’s presence. So, I placed the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help on the veranda for people to see whenever they pass-by the church. It is to remind them that we all have an advocate in heaven who will intercede for us during this dangerous time.
I decorated the image with plants which I took from the garden. These plants have deep roots on the ground. Yet, there is no option but to uproot them, which damaged the main root. Furthermore, there is not enough soil because the roots have engulfed the entire pot. After several days, the green plant turned brown and bone dry.
One plant was by now practically a stick with leaves dry as paper. I was thinking about whether to remove this plant and replace it. I decided to keep it even if it looks dead. I added some soil so that water is retained, and I always make sure that the soil is moist at all times.
For almost the entire period of the lockdown, I watered the plant. I was thinking that there must still be life left in the plant.
When I watered it a few days ago, I was surprised to see that new leaves were sprouting from its branches. The picture that accompanies this blog was taken during that time when I first saw the new leaves.
I was inspired when I saw it because amidst, the dry brown leaves are tender green leaves.
I realized that this is what life is all about. It is to continue hoping that something good will happen if it is meant to be. As we Filipinos would say, “Hangga’t may buhay, may pag-asa.“
Sometimes life may be bleak and dark, but if we do not give up, there is something good waiting to burst forth not with great and fanfare but with soft silence that you would never notice it until it is already there.
As long as our roots are connected with God and our lives nourished by the Word of God, hope will ever spring forth in our lives.
Today (May 24), as I celebrate my birthday, I remember in a particular manner my parents Jose and Ruth, may the Good Lord who gave me life through them will they themselves receive eternal life.
