Hope and her Daughters

Augustine of Hippo was apocryphally attributed to having said that “Hope has two beautiful daughters their names are Anger and Courage. “Anger” at the way things are and “Courage” to see that they do not remain the way they are.”

Hope, in its most simplistic definition, would be having the heartfelt conviction that despite all the bad things that are happening, something good will happen.

The reference point of our hope is Jesus Christ, who is the just judge. He will punish the wicked and vindicate the righteous.

Unfortunately, our present ideas eradicate this reality that Jesus will judge the living and the dead. It is only by having Jesus as the just judge can we believe that he will restore all things in him, through whom and for whom the world was created.

However, nowadays, the Jesus that is given to us is an emasculated Jesus.

Gone is the Jesus, who condemned the Sadducees and Pharisees, and is capable of going into the Temple to overturn the tables of money changers.

Instead, what is being portrayed to us is Jesus, who is willing to dialogue with Pilate!

In the Gospel, it was the Sadducees and Pharisees (whom Jesus called hypocrites) who engaged in dialogue with Pilate.

In an increasingly politically correct society, where everyone does not want to hurt other people’s sensitivities, no one seems to be willing to speak truth to power. Instead, we go to such great length to form our language in the least offensive manner, achieving nothing but the toleration of what it ought to be condemned.

When hard questions and decisive actions are needed, what we get is the pursuit of those activities that are either trivial or considered least offensive.

When the forest is on fire, we are thinking about how to maintain air quality.

When Rome was burning, we are discussing how to maintain our mental health and sanity amidst the fire.

It would have been better if we get on our feet and fetch some water…
