Holy Trinity Sunday 2022

WORD

"When the Lord established the heavens I was there,

when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep;

when he made firm the skies above,

when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth;

when he set for the sea its limit,

so that the waters should not transgress his command;

then was I beside him as his craftsman,

and I was his delight day by day,

playing before him all the while,

playing on the surface of his earth;

and I found delight in the human race."

(Proverbs 8: 27 – 31)

Wisdom is personified here in the Proverbs as someone who is with God when God created the cosmos.

For Christian theologians, this personification of Wisdom is a pre-figure of the Holy Spirit.

The pre-figure of the Holy Spirit is shown in Genesis as the mighty wind sweeping over the waters of chaos.

Wisdom personified in the Proverbs is described as God’s craftsman and delight.

Wisdom provides order and brings out what is delightful in that order.

OBSERVE

It is said that the Western Church is weak in its “pneumatology” (the theology dealing with the Holy Spirit) because of the West’s high emphasis on the Soteriology and Christology.

While it may be claimed that the Holy Spirit is the “forgotten Person of the Trinity,” it is not so with the Eastern Church with its emphasis on mystagogy and pneumatology.

Since we belong to the Western Church (that is to the Church of Rome) our understanding of God has been focused on the Father and the Son.

Even though when we were baptized, we were baptized in the “name of the Father, of the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

Furthermore, we start our prayers and other devout acts with the sign of the Cross.

The cross is a symbol that expresses our faith and our desire to remind ourselves that God is with us even in our mundane activities.

RESPOND

Heavenly Lord, you have revealed yourself as our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier.

You have shown yourself as One God with Three Divine Persons.

While our minds cannot understand fully this Mystery of the Trinity.

It is reminder that you Lord is Almighty God and not the product of our imaginations.

You have called us to a life of holiness with the Holy Spirit as our Guide.

May our lives be formed according to your will. Amen.

DISCERN

We can say that where the Holy Spirit is found, there is order.

The Holy Spirit cannot be claimed to be found in things that are not ordered.

The wise delights in the order found in what is true, good, and beautiful.

If God is made real in our lives, He is made present in the “order” that is found in our lives.

“Order” can be expressed in so many ways.

It is found, for example, in the coherence of our actions to our identity, as well as in the unity found between our words and works.

While we cannot totally understand the Mystery of the Trinity, by His grace, we can make God’s presence in our lives.
