Guiding Star (Reflection for the New Year)

When the Magi realized that Herod is a “Ruthless Scheming Quack” (click this to read ) who gathers information for his own advancement, they avoided him and went the other way.
An angel warned them of Herod’s real intention: Herod does not want to “worship” the new-born king but kill it.
Today, there are still so many Herods who would sacrifice everything and everyone for their ambitions.
They are experts in shaping stories that will favor them while destroying others as sacrifices at the altar of their dream for power and prestige.
These are predators from whom nothing escapes especially information that will be beneficial for them.
These “two-faced” predators project a “saintly-demeanor” but their hearts are filled with envy, frustrations and anger for their yet unfulfilled dreams for power and prestige.
The year 2020 will always be remembered by all of us who underwent this most challenging time.
COVID-19 may not be as difficult as the Marcos Martial Law regime or WWII (World War 2), but this would have been the closest possible that we can imagine at present.
Many of us were duped, starting with the Chinese Communist Party with their coronavirus.
Instead, we realized that everyone has an agenda, and they are creative in finding excuses to mask their ambitions under the guise of the “common good,” the “good of society,” or the “good of the ______” (just fill in the blank).
As we end our year, it is not without hope.
While modern-day Herods have shown themselves as to who they are, there are also people who are real Christians.
These Christians are like the shepherds who heard the angels sing on that silent night. They are a “people of good will.”
Unfortunately, there are those who have the pretensions of the shepherds but they are certainly not of good will.
The acts of charity that flooded us during the national lock-down, among many other acts of kindness, are testimonies to the goodness in the hearts of those who are simple and true.
These men and women are the real guiding stars that point to the reality of the presence and message of Christ among us.
May the Good Lord in his Providence protect us from evil, and may he strengthen those men and women of goodwill.
