Gift of Obedience December 20, 2020 Day 5

Mary’s obedience is her participation in the plan of God. When she received the angel’s message, Mary took it as her life’s mission, her reason for living. Catholics who have received the Good News need to discover how they can participate in establishing a just society.
CONTEXT
Only those who listen can obey. Our world is filled with furious noise that competes for our attention.
COVID-19 has brought about so many innovations in trying to reach out to people. Zoom meetings, online classes, online masses, online entertainment, and talk shows. Our Facebook or Twitter accounts are flooded with so much information assaulting our senses.
Did it make us more inclined to listen? Or we just look at it for a few moments, and then we turn to the next post?
To obey is to listen well, not just to hear.
CONTENT
Mary listened to what the angel was saying. She was trying to understand what the message is all about. While Zechariah only wanted to hear what he wants to hear, listening to what the angel said is impossible.
“I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” The words of Mary echoes in those who continue to believe in God’s providence and power despite the difficulties.
It is also an expression of sincere trust and surrender to the power of God. When the ego is marginalizing God, Mary reminds us that only in God can we find the fullness of being human. In participating in God’s work of salvation, the human person attains his/her fullness as a person.
CONNECTION: PARISH AS COMMUNION OF COMMUNITIES
Before the pandemic, when you go around cafes and malls, it is undoubtedly possible that you will find a group of young people talking over a cup of coffee. What is interesting is that they are not just having a conversation; they are having a Bible Study or Prayer Meeting.
This “sense of mission” of making disciples is something that we as Catholics have not developed extensively. However, it is not entirely absent since you can see this same zeal among members of the renewal movements, but as a way of life, this is still that we Catholics have yet to acquire.
Bringing the Gospel into our daily lives is something we are not yet comfortable doing for fear of being considered a fanatic or a fool.
The privileged places where we can share the Good News and practice our discipleship is in the parish and the Basic Ecclesial Communities. These are the venue where we can share the Word of God and the Eucharist.
