Changing Colors

This reminds me of Obama, Trump, and more…

Watching the unfolding drama in the US Capitol where its security was breached by protestors last January 6, 2021, during the “March to Save America,” made me realized how different US politics from the one in my home country.

Here in the Philippines, it is a multi-party system.

Due to its diversity, it is expected that parties would converge and diverge on many issues, which helps avoid party identification along ideological lines.

In the Philippines, it is easy to form and dissolve political parties according to convenience and utility.

Thus, it is no longer news to hear that many politicians (and others) would change parties to join the “ruling” party.

It is useful to some degrees because the ruling party can implement its programs without unnecessary political delays and hurdles.

Unfortunately, due to the absence of opposition, those in power have the free rein to do whatever they want to do.

In the absence of a strong symbolic figure who can stand as an expression and champion of the opposition, the establishment politicians felt that they have their free reins on power.

With those who control power surrounded by “Ruthless Scheming Quacks” and “Echo Chambers, Court Jesters and Chamber Pots,” it is easy to imagine how paranoid and Pharisaical the situation can become.

This is true across all spectrum of society.

This is why there is a need for people, who imperfect as they are, to remind those who hold power that they do not have free rein.

This reminds me of Obama, Trump, and more…
