Aguinaldo 2020 Day 8 Video (Gift of Fecundity)

The gift of bearing children and building a family is a gift that God has given to humankind since the beginning of time.

It is a gift that the Lord did not take away, even if our first parents sinned.

With its misplaced priorities, the world has created ways to destroy the integrity of the family.

The world challenges the Catholic family to become a counter-culture against an increasingly secularized and misdirected society that values more non-human living things than human life.

CONTEXT

Abortion KILLS MILLIONS, but there is silence on this.

Nowadays, it is seldom talked about. Why? Is it because we think that this does not matter?

It is said that we are living in a “throw away culture.”

Sadly, this “throw away culture” does not only involve the use of disposables that harm our environment. It has also shaped our present-day morals.

People are ignored when they are no longer useful.

Babies in the womb are aborted when they are INCONVENIENT. People are killed when they are considered useless or dangerous (such as drug addicts).

“Useless” people and unborn babies are disposables nowadays.

CONTENT

Elizabeth, who is advance in years, gave birth to John, which caused joy in the household of Zechariah and Elizabeth.

The fruitfulness (fecundity) of barren women has always been signs of God’s favor. Remember that Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Hannah, and Manoah’s wife (mother of Samson) were all considered barren.

After their period of barrenness, they conceived sons who became important players in the life of the Israelites.

Fecundity or fertility in bearing children is always considered as God’s blessing for women.

Building a family was considered participation in the building of a just society.

CONNECTION: THE FAMILY AND THE EUCHARIST

During high school or college retreats/recollections, “broken families” and “physical and emotional abandonment” by parents are always a recurring theme among students.

Seldom will you find a group where there are few of such cases.

Furthermore, early pregnancies and abortion are also increasing in frequency, particularly among those who came from broken families or felt emotionally neglected/abandoned by their parents.

Nowadays, children are considered “liabilities” or expenses due to the high cost of rearing children.

Responsible parents would always make sure that they have enough to raise children while those who are not would just have children which they would abandon to the streets.

In an increasingly secular society, the idea that children are God’s gift is no longer prevalent.

The gift of motherhood is no longer praised and valued.

The Family as the seedbed of Christian vocation needs to be strengthened.

It is in the family that children are supposed to be socialized into religious practices.

Families need to be encouraged to go together to Mass on Sundays and other holy days of obligation.
