God’s greatest gift is salvation, which he promised to our ancestors in the faith. The Canticle of Mary reminds us that God is faithful to those who believed in His promises.
CONTEXT
“Salvation” has become a vague and ambiguous word. It may mean differently to different people. Surveys have shown that there is a decreasing number of people who believe in heaven and hell. “Salvation,” as we understand it in the light of PCP II, is not only about heaven and hell, but it is also about justice, peace, and equality, among many other values of the Kingdom that elevated Filipinos from poverty, oppression, and suffering.
CONTENT
Mary’s canticle described what the Reign of God is. It is a praise of gratitude for the fulfillment of God’s plan for humanity brought about by the birth of Jesus. It is a description of God’s dream for humanity. It is also an invitation to participate in that dream by making it a reality in our lives. While we do not bring about the Reign of God since it is only God who is responsible for the coming of his Kingdom, we can participate in preparing for its coming by becoming a “people of good will.” As the angels on the eve of the Lord’s birth will sing “peace to people of good will.” The “people of good will” work for justice and righteousness exemplified in their lives.
CONNECTION: THE POOR
COVID-19 has disrupted our lives and made us stop to think in a significant way about how our world has become. It had shown the disparity between the poor and the rich when the latter fled to the safety of their rest/beach houses away from the dangers of heavily populated cities. The poor and the needy who lost their jobs waited for the government’s support waiting in long lines and crowded covered courts to claim their financial help. The medical front-liners who died serving the COVID-19 victims and those who continued to put their lives at risk to help others give us the picture of both the good and the bad that COVID-19 has brought about. There were evident charity and compassion amidst the COVID-19 crisis, which gives us a glimpse of what is waiting for us, a light amidst the darkness, a glimpse into a society of love and justice, which is part of God’s dream for us.
